This stone comes from the family of quartz gemstones. Due to irradiation and the presence of trace elements like sulfur and manganese its color is purple. The name “amethyst” comes from ancient and modern greek language and it means “not intoxicated”. It is believed that the wearer of the stone will be protected from drunkenness.

The amethyst is found abundantly in Brazil and Uruguay. It is also found in South Korea, Austria, Zambia, Africa, and South India. Many states of the USA also have mines of amethyst gemstone.

History of the Amethyst

Amethyst was always considered as a royal gemstone. Ancient Egyptian and Greek royals used to wear Amethyst jewelry. They also had their thrones and pots embellished with amethysts. Bishops used to wear amethyst rings as a sign that they are “not drunk”. In Medieval times, European soldiers used to wear the amethyst on their shields. They believed that the gemstone would protect them from evil and would heal them faster.

In Buddhism, the amethyst is considered a very sacred gemstone and they even create their prayer beads from it.

The amethyst is considered to be one of the five most precious gemstones. The five precious gemstones being the diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, and amethyst. However, its value has decreased with the passage of time and the abundant quantity found in Brazil. Still, it’s a cherished and fantastic gemstone having a precious purple look and spiritual and healing properties.
